These files are highly compressed audio in the Ogg Vorbis format. If you
don't know what that is you can find more information at
Using Ogg Vorbis allowed these to be compressed from 44 CDs to 1 CD without
becoming unintelligible. A good player is Zinf, a free player similar to the
original Winamp, but with support for Ogg Vorbis and other audio formats.
Many Personal Digital Audio Players now have Ogg Vorbis support (see links
from the above Wikipedia page).
